United for the Monk Seal: Seal Greece & iSea Join Forces in Lefkada
On July 26–27, the Seal Greece information campaign visited Lefkada, launching a series of awareness-raising activities in collaboration with iSea. Held at Lefkada Marina, the event drew in locals, tourists, and sailors eager to learn how they can help protect one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals: the Mediterranean monk seal.
As part of a nationwide effort led by the Monk Seal Alliance and NECCA—and under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy—Seal Greece is visiting over 20 islands this summer across the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The campaign focuses on educating the public about critical monk seal habitats, including newly designated protected areas, and promoting citizen involvement in marine conservation.
At the heart of this successful event was our dedicated team who arrived onboard Bonnie R, provided by Aegean Cargo Sailing. Through engaging discussions and informative materials, they inspired visitors to take an active interest in the survival of the Mediterranean monk seal in Greek waters.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to D-Marin for their generous hospitality and support in sharing our mission with their community thus playing a key role in the success of our Lefkada stop.
Next up: As part of our collaboration with iSea, Tethys Research Institute, and Blue Marine Foundation, the iSea team is heading to Sivota, Vassiliki and Nydri (1-3 Aug) and we will catch up with them again in Vathi, Ithaca, on August 5th. Join us as we keep raising awareness and building momentum for monk seal protection across Greece.
