Monitoring and Managing Threats

in Key Hotspots

Effective protection requires understanding and responding to ongoing threats. SEAL GREECE will establish a monitoring system in at least two key monk seal hotspots lacking current management plans. By October 2026, anthropogenic pressures will be quantified, disturbances tracked in real time, and a response mechanism developed to enforce existing conservation laws, such as those under the Habitat Directive and Natura 2000. This goal ensures that NECCA can take informed and timely action to safeguard critical habitats.

What we aim to do

Track and respond to disturbances in areas where there is no current management system.

Key Actions

  • Monitor threats in at least 2 hotspots

  • Set up real-time disturbance detection systems

  • Develop a rapid response mechanism for NECCA to take action

  • Use data to support enforcement and policy updates

Outcome by October 2026

A clear picture of threats—and tools to manage them—are in place to protect monk seal habitats effectively.
